Longleaf Historic Resources

Longleaf Historic Resources is a historic preservation consulting firm in Raleigh, North Carolina. I established Longleaf in 1990 to provide preservation services to owners, advocates and developers of historic properties and to the public sector. The name honors the Longleaf pine, the largest and strongest of the pine species, that was indigenous to my home region of the Sandhills, North Carolina. Like historic buildings and decorative arts, the Longleaf pine is an endangered species.

Longleaf Historic Resources brings fifty years of experience in the documentation, evaluation, and accreditation of historic buildings and landscapes in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Rhode Island, and Mississippi. Clients include the owners of urban buildings and farms, non-profit organizations, and developers, as well as local, state, and federal agencies.

One focus of the firm’s attention is writing. I have published ten substantial books and a number of articles on North Carolina architecture and decorative arts. My latest book, The Book of Ruth: Taming Ghosts, Saving History, was published in 2022 by Lystra Books of Chapel Hill. It is available on Amazon, Kindle, and in bookstores.
