Ruth’s art was displayed at the art show "The Fungus Among Us" at Pullen Art Center from Nov. 5, 2022 to Jan. 5, 2023.
The “Fungus Among Us” explores the symbiotic relationship between green plants and mycorrhizal fungus, often called the “Wood Wide Web.” All life on earth depends on this relationship: green plants convert sunlight into sugar (photosynthesis) for themselves and release oxygen to create the air we breathe. The fungal mat connected to plant roots absorb the plant’s sugar and give water, nitrogen and phosphorus to the plant. This fungal web allows the plants to “communicate” and support each other. My paintings reflect my newfound awareness of this truth of nature. It is based on mutuality and reciprocity, not hierarchy. It’s an incredible time to be alive.
